School policies on toy guns have received a lot of negative attention since the Newtown shooting. The general consensus is that school policy has gone overboard in suspending kids for toys like Hello Kitty Bubble guns.
Strobridge Elementary School in Hayward, CA, is taking a more proactive approach to eliminating toy guns. They've sponsored a tradein at which students can swap their toy guns for raffle tickets offering four new bikes as top prizes, or books as runners' up prizes.
"Playing with toys guns, saying 'I'm going to shoot you,' desensitizes [kids], so as they get older, it's easier for them to use a real gun," said Strobridge Elementary principal Chris Hill to Mercury News.
The tradein and raffle are part of the school's "Safety Day," which took place on Saturday and also involved talks from police and firefighters, the Daily Caller reports.
